The AN/SQS-35 is an independent, variable depth sonar system (IVDS). Towed at whatever depth is needed to be searched, it operates in search, attack, and listen (passive) modes, and uses 3 target displays, two PPIs and a classification recorder.
The EDO Model 983, a 13 kHz Variable Depth Sonar (VDS), evolved over the past 30 years in the US Navy SQS-35 VDS sonar program. This VDS provides the surface ship a high frequency, below layer sonar capability.
