First and foremost, creating and maintaining this site has and continues to be an absolute pleasure! This site is offered as a testimony and a tribute to both the USS Badger DE/FF-1071 and all the men who served aboard her from her commissioning in 1970 until her decommissioning in 1991.
Although this site primarily databases information about USS Badger DE/FF1071, information regarding other Frigates of the era is also provided. This information is located on the Frigates informational page. I have also captured information regarding the Navy's "first of the frigates" in the scrapbook which is located under "Miscellaneous" in the navigation bar on the left of your screen. You'll find that the scrapbook also contains information on an assortment of other items including but not limited to: miscellaneous naval topics, naval poems, prayers and hymns, nautical knots, ship classification symbols, US Naval arsenal and Recollections of Stephen A. Hoagland, a shipmate who served aboard the USS George E. Badger DD-196. These recollections were posted at the request of his son, Stephen Hoagland Jr.
Each of the many HTML pages that comprise this site have been individually crafted and coded without the use of frames. I mention frames because had I used them coding would have been incredibly easier especially considering the banner, upper and left task bars are consistent throughout the many pages that comprise this site! There are many reasons however, why I opted not to use frames and to instead extensively code each page individually, one by one. There was also a purpose behind the simplicity of the site's design and the "keep it simple" approach which was employed when it came to the coding itself. As a matter of fact about the only code you'll find throughout these pages is CSS, HTML, java-script, PHP, and some flash buttons which have been installed on the crew list pages and the embroidery products page. The exceptions are obvious and include full blown web applications written for specific purposes, i.e., the Bulletin Board, Gallery and the Scrapbook just to name a few.
I recommend browsing this site with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5x or greater. Although there are several reasons for this recommendation suffice it to say that during the design and testing phases it consistently yielded the very best results. Other browsers I tested which yielded good results were Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.7.2, Opera 7.54, Mozilla Firefox 1.x and Safari 1.2.3 (v125.9) for Apple/MacIntosh computers.
I would also like to point out that this site was specifically designed to fit on screens set to 800x600 resolution, however, I recommend a resolution setting of 1152x864. Please note that this recommendation is based solely on personal preference.
Any consistent bugs, broken links, etc., should be reported in the "Bug Report" message board.
Brian Jewell personally wrote and maintains the PHP code for the Contact Us, Recommend Us and Crew List Request Forms that this site utilizes. He also designed the orginal USS Badger 1071 banner and page layout. His assistance has been very much appreciated!
